The Catch Nobody Mentions: 6,000 lbs Is Not Every Trim
Search the Pathfinder's tow rating and every result says 6,000 lbs. That is true, and it is incomplete in a way that can cost you real money.
Nissan's own trim comparison splits it four ways. Rock Creek and Platinum are rated up to 6,000 lbs.SV and SL start at 3,500 lbs and only reach 6,000 with their respective premium package.
3,500 lbs against 6,000 lbs is not a technicality. It is the difference between a small aluminum fishing boat and an eighteen-foot bowrider with a family aboard. If you walk onto a lot, buy an SV because the price looked right, and then discover in June that your boat is over the rating, the fix is a trade rather than an accessory.
So the practical rule when you are shopping a Pathfinder to tow with: read the window sticker for the tow package, not the brochure for the model. We can tell you in thirty seconds which of the Pathfinders on our lot at 101 Valley Ave NW is which.

What a 6,000-lb Rating Actually Covers

Trailered weight is the number that matters, and it is always more than the number on the hull.
A typical 18 to 20 foot bowrider, on its trailer, with a full fuel tank and the gear people actually leave in the boat, generally lands in the four-thousand-pound neighborhood. That sits inside 6,000 lbs with real margin, and a properly equipped Pathfinder pulls it out to Lake Tapps without complaint.
A pontoon of similar length is usually lighter still. A small aluminum fishing boat is not even a conversation.
Where it stops working is the modern wake boat. Those carry ballast, and a 21-foot surf boat with tanks full and a tower loaded can push past 6,000 lbs on its own. If that is your boat, this is the wrong vehicle and we would rather tell you now than sell you the wrong SUV. The Nissan Armada tows up to 8,500 lbs and makes 516 lb-ft of torque, and that is the honest answer for a heavy rig.
These are typical ranges, not specifications. Every trailer, motor and load is different. Run your loaded rig across a certified scale once, write the number down, and stop guessing. It takes twenty minutes and it settles the question for the life of the boat.

Tow rating gets all the attention. Gross Combined Weight Rating is the one that quietly catches people out on a family boat day.
The Pathfinder's GCWR is 11,100 lbs across all four trims. That is the ceiling for everything at once: the SUV, everybody in it, everything in the back, and the trailer behind it.
The problem with a three-row SUV is that it invites you to fill it. Eight people is a lot of pounds, and the cooler and the tubes and the wet towels are more.

The takeaway is not that the Pathfinder is marginal. It is that towing capacity and passenger capacity draw from the same account, and the eight-seat vehicle is the one where it is easiest to forget that.
Tow mode helps with the driving part. It is one of the seven selectable drive modes, and it holds gears longer so the 9-speed is not hunting under load on the climb out of the valley. Use it any time the trailer is on, even for the flat run out SR 410.

From our lot on Valley Ave NW it is a straightforward fifteen or twenty minutes with a trailer, out SR 410 through Sumner and up onto the plateau. The only part that asks anything of the vehicle is the climb, and that is what Tow mode is for.
The lake itself is a managed reservoir rather than a natural lake, which matters for a practical reason: the water level is drawn down outside the recreation season. Launch availability genuinely changes through the year, so check conditions before you hitch up in April or October.
Where South Sound Boats Go In
- Allan Yorke Park, Bonney Lake: the main public access on the lake, and the busiest ramp on a July Saturday. Get there early.
- North Lake Tapps Park: the north-end alternative when the Bonney Lake lot is full.
- American Lake, Lakewood: the JBLM-side option, about forty minutes out on I-5.
- Lake Kapowsin, near Orting: quieter, smaller, and the one for a fishing boat rather than a ski boat.
- Point Defiance, Tacoma: saltwater launch when somebody wants to go out on the Sound instead.
One argument for 4WD that has nothing to do with winter: a boat ramp is wet concrete on a slope, frequently with algae on it. That is the exact condition where a front-drive vehicle spins, because the trailer's tongue weight is lifting the drive wheels rather than loading them. If you tow, order the 4WD. Ours are on the lot for the same reason.
