How do you sell your car to Bill Korum's Puyallup Nissan?

There are four steps. Get a free Kelley Blue Book Instant Cash Offer online, bring the vehicle to 101 Valley Ave NW in Puyallup, let a used-car manager drive and inspect it so the estimate becomes a written offer, then accept or decline. If you accept, we handle the title and Department of Licensing paperwork.

1. OnlineEnter your plate or VIN, mileage and condition. A Kelley Blue Book Instant Cash Offer comes back, and nothing is binding on either side.Plate or VIN
2. Come inWe are on Valley Ave NW, a minute off WA-167 and about ten minutes from the WA-512 junction. An appointment is quicker; walk-ins are fine. The vehicle

The online number is a starting estimate, not a final offer. The figure that counts is the written one that comes after a person has actually looked at the vehicle.

Do you have to file a Report of Sale in Washington when you sell to a dealer?

Yes. The Washington State Department of Licensing lists "trade to a dealer" among the transfers a seller must report, and the Report of Sale is due within 5 days of the sale date. A registered Washington dealer may file it on your behalf, and we do, but DOL is explicit that confirming it was filed remains the owner's responsibility.

This is the step people skip, and it is the one that costs them. Until the Report of Sale is on file, the state still has the vehicle under your name. DOL says filing it protects you from being liable for towing charges and for civil and criminal liabilities the new owner runs up. It takes a few minutes and can be filed online without an account.

Ask us for the confirmation before you leave. We file the Report of Sale on vehicles we buy, and the DOL guidance is that you should still check it was submitted rather than assume it. The official instructions and the online filing form are on the Washington State Department of Licensing sell-a-vehicle page.

You will need the plate number, the date of sale, the sale price, the VIN, and the name and address of whoever took ownership. When you sell to us, that last part is simply the dealership.

Should you sell outright or trade it in?

Sell outright when you want the vehicle gone and the money in your account, with no obligation to buy anything. Trade in when you are replacing it. In Washington the choice is not purely a matter of preference, because the state's trade-in rule only reduces sales tax when the trade and the purchase are one transaction.

The Washington trade-in rule, in plain terms

Washington's Department of Revenue reduces the taxable amount of a vehicle purchase by the value of a trade-in, but only where the trade-in is given to the same seller as consideration for that purchase. The rule requires the buyer to deliver the trade-in property to the seller, so selling your car to one dealer for cash and then buying from another is not a trade-in for tax purposes. Cash paid back to you for a trade does not qualify either.

Two details that catch people out: a loan payoff does not reduce the trade-in allowance, and you do not need to have paid sales tax on the vehicle you are trading to get the benefit. The rules are set out in WAC 458-20-247 and in the Department of Revenue's auto dealer trade-in guide.

We sell cars; we do not give tax advice. What is worth doing is knowing the rule exists before you decide, because it is the one real financial difference between the two routes. Your tax advisor or the Department of Revenue can tell you what it means for your numbers.

If you are leaning toward trading, browse used inventory, Certified Pre-Owned Nissan or the new Nissan lineup first, and our finance team can tell you where you stand before you arrive.

What do you need to bring to 101 Valley Ave NW?

Bring the title if you hold it, your current Washington registration, photo ID for everyone named on the title, and every key and remote. If there is still a loan on the vehicle, bring your lender's name, your account number and a current payoff quote instead of the title.

Washington ended its vehicle emission check program at the start of 2020, so there is no emissions test to chase before you sell.

What happens to your license plates, and why does it matter on the Narrows?

In Washington the plates come off with you, not with the car. The Department of Licensing says the seller is legally obligated to remove them, and that doing so protects you from being held liable for towing charges, parking tickets, speed camera tickets and toll bills run up by the new owner.

That last one carries real weight around Puget Sound. Between the Tacoma Narrows Bridge on SR-16, the HOT lanes on SR-167 and the express toll lanes on I-405, a vehicle still wearing your plates can run up tolls for weeks before anything reaches you. Pulling the plates and filing the Report of Sale are the two steps that close that door.

You can move the plates to another vehicle you own, provided it is the same kind of vehicle, or surrender them at any vehicle licensing office. Either way the buyer cannot use them.

Can you sell a car you still owe money on?

Yes, and at Bill Korum's Puyallup Nissan it is routine. We settle the remaining balance directly with your lender. If the vehicle is worth more than you owe, the difference comes to you or goes toward your next vehicle. If you owe more than it is worth, there are still options and we will walk you through what each one costs.

Your lender holding the title does not stop the sale. It is the ordinary case rather than the exception, and the payoff is handled as part of the transaction instead of something you have to settle beforehand.

Where the payoff is higher than the vehicle's value, which is negative equity, the options include rolling the difference into a new loan. We will set out what each route actually costs you, not only the ones that suit us. Our finance team handles this daily, and if your credit is part of the picture there is a separate page on low credit auto financing in Puyallup.

Do you have to own a Nissan to sell one here?

No. Bill Korum's Puyallup Nissan buys any make and model, and it does not matter where the vehicle was originally bought. Toyotas, Hondas, Subarus, Fords, Rams, imports and trucks are all routine, and high mileage or cosmetic damage does not rule a vehicle out.

A good share of the pre-owned lot was bought from people in Puyallup, Sumner, Bonney Lake and South Hill who wanted a clean sale without putting a stranger in the passenger seat for a test drive on Meridian. If you would rather see what we currently have than sell, the used truck inventory and the used SUV inventory turn over weekly.

Let us look at it before you decide it is not worth anything.

What if you are PCSing from Joint Base Lewis-McChord?

Bill Korum's Puyallup Nissan handles PCS sales regularly. Bring the vehicle, the title or your lender payoff details, and photo ID for everyone on the title, and the sale can usually be completed in a single visit, which is the point when you are working to orders rather than to a calendar.

We are about half an hour from JBLM, up I-5 and across on WA-512, and we are open until 7:00 pm six days a week for the days when the only free hour is after work. If you are shipping one vehicle and selling another, getting the online number first means you arrive knowing roughly where you stand.

One thing worth doing before you leave the state: file the Report of Sale, or confirm we filed it. A vehicle still registered to you in Washington is a problem that follows you to the next duty station. If you are buying rather than selling before you go, there is also a Nissan military discount program.

Frequently asked questions about selling a car in Puyallup

Do I have to buy a car from you to sell you mine?

No. Bill Korum's Puyallup Nissan buys vehicles outright with no purchase required. You can sell us your car and walk away, and plenty of people do.

Will you buy my car if it is not a Nissan?

Yes. We buy any make and model, not just Nissan, and it does not matter where the vehicle was originally purchased.

Do I need to file a Report of Sale if I sell my car to a dealer in Washington?

Yes. The Washington State Department of Licensing lists trading to a dealer among the transfers a seller must report, within 5 days of the sale date. A registered Washington dealer may file it on your behalf, and we do, but DOL states that confirming it was submitted is the owner's responsibility. Ask us for that confirmation before you leave.

Do I keep my license plates when I sell my car in Washington?

Yes. The seller is legally obligated to remove the plates. The Department of Licensing says this protects you from being held liable for towing charges, parking tickets, speed camera tickets and toll bills incurred by the new owner, which matters around here given the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, SR-167 and I-405. You can transfer the plates to another vehicle of the same kind or surrender them at a vehicle licensing office.

Is it better to sell my car for cash or trade it in?

It depends on whether you are replacing it. In Washington the trade-in allowance reduces the taxable amount of a vehicle purchase only when the trade and the purchase are one transaction with the same seller, so selling for cash to one dealer and buying from another does not qualify. We sell cars and do not give tax advice, so check what that means for your situation with the Department of Revenue or your tax advisor.

Can I sell a car I am still making payments on?

Yes. We settle the outstanding balance directly with your lender. Bring your lender's name, your account number and a current payoff quote. If your vehicle is worth more than the payoff, the difference is yours.

Is the online number what I will actually be paid?

It is a starting estimate, not a final offer. The written offer comes after a used-car manager has driven and inspected the vehicle, and the figure can move in either direction depending on what that inspection finds.

How long does it take to sell my car?

The online Kelley Blue Book Instant Cash Offer takes a few minutes. The in-person appraisal usually takes under an hour, and if you accept the offer the paperwork is normally finished the same visit.

Do you buy high-mileage or damaged vehicles?

Yes. High mileage or cosmetic damage does not rule a vehicle out. Let us look at it before you decide it is not worth anything.
