Who Actually Fits in Each Row
Row one, 44.3 inches of legroom
The Front Row Is Not the Constraint
44.3 inches of front legroom is generous for a midsize SUV, and tall drivers have room to spare. The driver's seat is 8-way power on every trim, so getting a comfortable position takes seconds rather than a fight with a manual lever.
Nobody shops a three-row SUV worried about the front seats. The reason it is worth stating is that the Pathfinder does not buy its third row by squeezing the driver, which is a real trade some competitors make.
Row two, 35.5 inches of legroom, three belts
The Row That Decides Whether You Seat Eight
The standard 60-40 split bench is what makes the Pathfinder an 8-seater. It slides fore and aft, so you can steal legroom from row two and give it to row three when the back is full of teenagers.
The feature worth knowing about is EZ FLEX. The bench tilts and slides forward with a child seat still latched in, which means you are not unbuckling a car seat every time somebody needs the third row. Very few midsize SUVs do this.
Three car seats across is a maybe, not a yes
Three belted positions is not the same as three car seats that fit. Narrow convertible seats usually go three across. Three wide infant carriers usually do not. Bring the seats you own to our lot and try them, because this is the one question a spec sheet cannot answer.
Row three, 28.0 inches of legroom
A Real Third Row, With Honest Limits
28.0 inches of third-row legroom is standard for the midsize class. Kids and teens ride back there without complaint. Adults are fine on the run to Sea-Tac or across town to Tacoma, and will want to swap forward before a drive to Portland.
The number that catches people out is cargo. With all eight seats occupied you have 16.6 cu ft behind row three. That is a real trunk, not a parcel shelf, but it is not a road-trip-for-eight-with-luggage amount of space. Plan on a roof box for the Chinook Pass camping weekend.

Can three car seats fit across the Pathfinder's second row?
It depends on the seats, not just the SUV. The 60-40 split bench has three belted positions and 35.5 inches of legroom, so narrow-base convertible seats usually work across. Do adults fit in the Pathfinder's third row?
For short trips, yes. The third row has 28.0 inches of legroom, which is normal for a midsize three-row SUV and comfortable for kids and teens. Adults will be fine from Puyallup to Sea-Tac and will want the second row on the way to Portland.
How much cargo space is behind the Pathfinder's third row?
16.6 cu ft with all three rows up, on every trim. Fold the third row and that grows to about 45 cu ft, and folding everything opens up roughly 80.5 cu ft. The 16.6 figure is the one that matters most, because it is what you have when the SUV is actually full of people.
Does seating capacity change the Pathfinder's towing rating?
No. Seating and towing are separate. Rock Creek and Platinum tow up to 6,000 lbs when properly equipped, while SV and SL tow 3,500 lbs standard and reach 6,000 lbs with their premium package. Passenger count does not change those numbers, though what you load does affect what you should tow.
Is the Pathfinder or the Armada the better fit for a big family in the South Sound?
Both seat eight, so the question is size and towing. The Pathfinder is easier to park in downtown Puyallup and tows up to 6,000 lbs. The Armada is longer, carries 20.4 cu ft behind its third row instead of 16.6, and tows up to 8,500 lbs. If you pull a boat to Lake Tapps, look at the Armada. If you mostly haul people, the Pathfinder is the easier vehicle to live with.
