Two Nissan stories landed within weeks of each other this summer, and they point in opposite directions. The 2027 Z reaches US dealerships with an available six-speed manual for the NISMO grade, a transmission enthusiasts have asked for since the car launched. Meanwhile the Frontier, a truck nobody calls exciting, has just posted its best June retail performance since 2010 with retail sales up about 37 percent year over year. For buyers around Puyallup and the South Sound, one of these is worth chasing and the other is worth acting on quickly.
What Nissan Announced This Summer
Three separate pieces of news, all inside about five weeks.
On the Z, Nissan's 2027 Z press kit confirms the refreshed lineup reaches dealerships in summer 2026, headlined by an available six-speed manual for the NISMO grade.
On June 23, Nissan's Canton, Mississippi plant marked the assembly of its one-millionth Frontier. Six days later Nissan announced the 250th Anniversary Edition Frontier, marking America's 250th birthday with an exclusive monochromatic Stars and Stripes design on the tailgate badge. Nissan notes more than two million Frontiers have been assembled in the US since 1998.
And in its second-quarter US sales report, Nissan put numbers behind the Frontier's run.

Why the Manual Is the Actual Z News

The Z has offered a manual since it launched. The NISMO, the sharpest version of it, did not, and that produced a specific and much-repeated complaint: the most driver-focused Z was the one you could not shift yourself.
That is what 2027 fixes, and the detail suggests Nissan took the complaint seriously rather than checking a box. Per Nissan, the transmission was engineered for the NISMO grade specifically, with an upgraded clutch compared to the Z Sport and Performance grades. A new shift-lever ratio shortens the shift stroke, and the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 gets its own throttle and ignition tuning for the manual, tuned for sharper response and more sustained torque delivery.
Nissan also states there is no difference in output between the six-speed manual and the nine-speed automatic. You are choosing how the car is driven, not how quick it is on a stopwatch, and for the person who wanted this transmission that is exactly the right way round.
A note on availability, from a dealership that has to be honest about it
Sports cars arrive in small numbers. A specific grade of a sports car with a specific transmission arrives in smaller numbers still. Early allocation on something like the Z NISMO manual is typically claimed before it reaches a lot.

Those are Nissan's own figures, and they describe a truck that has quietly found its audience. Nissan attributes the run to demand for value and consistent quality in the midsize segment, which is a corporate way of saying people worked out that a midsize truck does most of what they were buying a full-size one for.
The 250th Anniversary Edition sits on top of that. It is a styling package rather than a mechanical one: an exclusive monochromatic Stars and Stripes design on the tailgate badge, built on the PRO-4X. Press reporting describes a run of roughly 2,500 trucks assembled through July, which if accurate means the entire run is already built. That is the practical thing to understand about it in August. This is not a truck you order. It is one you find, or you do not.
What Both Stories Mean Around Puyallup and the South Sound
National coverage stops at the announcement. Here is the part that is local.
- There is somewhere to actually drive a manual Z. Pacific Raceways in Kent is about twenty minutes north of our lot and runs events through the season. That is the responsible answer to what a NISMO is for, and it is close enough that owning one here makes more sense than it does in a lot of markets.
- And there are the summer roads. SR 410 climbing toward Chinook Pass and SR 706 out toward the Nisqually entrance are the drives people move to this area for. Both are summer propositions, though: WSDOT gates Chinook Pass every winter between Crystal Mountain Boulevard and Morse Creek. A rear-drive sports car in a Puget Sound January is a second car, and we would rather say that up front.
- The Frontier fits how this valley works. Between the Port of Tacoma, the warehouse corridor through Sumner and Kent, the trades across Pierce County and Joint Base Lewis-McChord down in Lakewood, this is a market full of people who need a truck for real reasons and do not want a full-size one on SR 167 at rush hour or in a Tacoma parking garage.
- PRO-4X earns its keep off SR 410. The forest-service roads toward Greenwater and the Cascade foothills are where the off-road hardware stops being a trim level and starts being useful. That is also the configuration the anniversary edition is built on.

What Happens Next
For the Z, the summer arrival window is now, and allocation is the whole story. Expect the manual NISMO to be the hardest configuration to find, and expect stores to be quoting waits rather than stock.
For the Frontier, the anniversary edition is a finite thing that has already been built, so availability only goes one direction from here. The regular Frontier lineup carries on unaffected, and given the sales run, well-configured trucks are not sitting around either.
