The Difference Between Premium and Regular Gas

A man filling up a car with premium gas

When it’s time to refuel in Puyallup, you pull into the gas station to see you have a few choices at the pump. Curious about the difference between the premium, regular, and other gas choices? Wondering what those yellow labels with 87, 89, and 91 or 93 actually mean? In the following guide to premium vs. regular gas, we’ll take a look at what sets these options apart and what is best for your new Nissan on the streets of Tacoma and beyond.

Regular Gasoline

Regular gasoline is the fuel level you certainly are familiar with, and most likely have used to refuel the majority of the vehicles in your life in Bonney Lake. While both regular and premium gasoline are made from crude oil, the octane level differentiates them. The number on the yellow label represents the octane level. Regular, as you’ve probably noticed, has an octane level of 87. It’s versatile formula is safe for most vehicles, and is most often also the cheapest.

Premium Gasoline

If regular gasoline works well for most vehicles and is more economical, why choose premium? Again— octane level. For premium gasoline, its 90 or higher. Higher octane levels:

  • Prevent engine misfires known as “knocks”
  • Increase fuel efficiency
  • Reduce harmful emissions

This option leads to better performance from your vehicle and can ensure a healthier engine over time. For that reason, many high-performance models like the new 2020 Nissan 370Z actually require premium gasoline for optimal function. Hardworking engines with turbochargers and engines with higher compression ratios come with a higher chance of pre-ignition (when your fuel mixture ignites before you spark plugs). Because premium fuel takes more pressure to ignite, there is a much lower chance of pre-ignition. Still curious? We’re always a resource to you for more tips and tricks.
