How to Clean Leather Car Seats

Interior of a 2020 Nissan Rogue with leather seats

If there’s one feature that is popular with Tacoma drivers, it’s leather seats. It’s easy to see why. Leather seats are both comfortable and attractive, at least until they start to get stained and cracked. That’s why it’s so important to maintain them and clean them properly. But leather seat care is a little more complicated than caring for cloth seats. So, let’s talk about how to clean leather car seats the right way.

Leather Seat Care

Sunlight is the enemy of leather, especially during the hot sunny days around the Bonney Lake area. Sunlight will cause leather to fade over time. So if you can keep your car parked in a garage, under a carport, or under a shade tree, you should do so to extend the life and appearance of your seats. If you have to keep your car parked in the sun, consider buying some inexpensive car shades that you can place in your windshield and on your windows. Of course, you’ll also want to clean your seats regularly. But cleaning them the wrong way can damage them. So it’s important to know how to clean leather car seats properly.

How to Clean Leather Car Seats Properly

Are your seats perforated (do they have little holes in the leather)? If so, you’ll want to be careful not to let any water or cleaner get trapped in the holes. Always spray cleaner on your microfiber cloth, and not directly on the seats. Follow the steps below for proper leather seat care:

  • Gather all of your supplies
    • A vacuum cleaner
    • Cleaner made especially for leather, such as saddle soap
    • Two microfiber cloths or a soft-bristled brush
    • Leather conditioner
  • Gently vacuum the seats, taking care not to rub any dirt in
  • Test the cleaner on a small spot that can’t be easily seen. If the spot is discolored, don’t use the cleaner.
  • Spray the cleaner on a microfiber cloth (not the seat), and apply
  • Gently rub in the leather conditioner
